World of Warcraft
WorldofWarcraft, a massive multiplayer online role-playing game, otherwise known as MMORPG, is a Blizzard Entertainment game, set in a fantasy world called Warcraft Universe. This game was first introduced in 1994 as a part of Warcraft: Orcs & Humans. Set in a world known as Azeroth, it takes place 4 years from the end of Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne. As a part of the 10th anniversary celebration of Warcraft, on November 23, 2004, it was broadcast to the world. It boasts the position of having the worldís largest MMORPG subscription base. According to the Guinness World Record book, it is the most popular MMORPG. The site of WorldofWarcraft has over 16,000,000 subscribers.
Blizzard Entertainment released the first official expansion game pack on January 16, 2007. This was called The Burning Crusade. The BlizzCon event on August 3, 2007, brought the announcement of a second expansion pack called Wrath of the Lich King.
This game is not a real-time strategy one. Character avatars are chosen by players to represent who they are in the game. These characters explore different lands, fight off monsters, finish quests, and engage with other players. As with most other MMORPGs, there is a subscription fee to be able to play this game. Players can either buy game cards for different amounts of time which are sold by retailers, or they can pay with a credit or debit card.
The first thing every player has to do when starting WorldofWarcraft is to select a realm or server to play on. This realm is a copy of the game world, and has 2 classes which are Player versus Player or Player versus Environment. Variations of the roleplay are available to players who want them, and, for a fee, they can move their set of characters between realms. Once the realm is chosen, players can decide if they want to use a previous character or create a new one. Characters can belong to either the Alliance faction or the Horde faction. When it comes to communication, grouping or trading, characters are required to be from the same faction. Players then decide what race and class their character will be. These characters can be taught many things, including professions. Characters can be played alone, or in groups, in order to face more challenging quests.
